Sketch 1st

OK I sketched myself.  What I learned is that it is hard to make a realistic drawing of yourself.  The mirror is better than the photo for self study, but both are hard.  I seem to draw myself with a masculine look.  If anyone has suggestions please help me.

Tomorrow I will paint.  We will see if I then sketch again.

Wish me luck.

  1. Do you have any watecolor markers? Look in the mirror and draw your portrait right on the glass - it will get your hand used to drawing the lines and proportions of your face. Erase and draw again and again until you find your groove, then try it out on paper.

    :) Have fun.

  2. Great job getting started! You're right, getting a likeness is extremely challenging! I like what Robinsunne suggests.
A completely different idea is to work in reverse, with vine charcoal and a kneaded eraser. Darken your paper and use your eraser to draw. Look at your face in terms of where the groupings of lights and shadows are, rather than lines. You can add charcoal pencil to sharpen focus in some areas once you've gotten the shapes established.
I think what you're doing is great! I definitely don't allow enough time for my art, thanks for the inspiration to work on that! ~L.

  3. One exercise we did was to sketch your portrait upside down. Helps with proportions. Great start!
